Why Frewza® Boats Proved Every Boat Is Different

At first glance, Frewza® boats look familiar.

Like many New Zealand pontoon boats, they're built tough, designed for fishing and feature practical aluminium layouts that appeal to serious anglers. Their reputation for durability, simplicity and fishability has made Frewza one of New Zealand's most respected pontoon boat manufacturers.

When we first began configuring Ultimate Rod Racks for Frewza boats, we assumed the solution would be straightforward.

After all, we'd already spent years developing our 34mm Hybrid™ GunnelCore™ System for Stabicraft® boats.

Both brands feature aluminium pontoon construction.

Both use folded storage pockets.

Both are built around practical fishing layouts.

On paper, they looked remarkably similar.

In reality, they weren't.

And that's exactly why GunnelCore™ exists.

Looking Beyond First Impressions

One of the biggest lessons we've learned while developing Ultimate Rod Racks is that two boats can appear almost identical while requiring completely different engineering.

From above, the storage pockets on many Frewza boats looked very similar to the Stabicraft layout we'd already engineered around.

Naturally, we began by trialling our proven 34mm Hybrid™ Back Frame.

It fitted.

It worked.

But something wasn't quite right.

The boat was telling us there was a better solution.

The Hidden Difference

Once we began measuring the pocket more closely, we discovered the difference.

Unlike the stepped pocket geometry found on many Stabicraft® boats, many Frewza models feature a distinctive bulb-shaped lower section within the folded C-section storage pocket.

That extra depth wasn't simply part of the manufacturing process.

It represented additional supporting surface that our existing 34mm Hybrid™ Back Frame wasn't fully utilising.

The installation was already good.

But good isn't the standard we aim for.

Engineering Around the Boat

Rather than accepting a solution that was merely "good enough", we went back to the drawing board.

The result was the deepest Hybrid™ Back Frame we've ever developed.

The 60mm Hybrid™.

By extending deeper into the Frewza storage pocket, the 60mm Hybrid™ is able to utilise the additional supporting surfaces built into the boat's unique geometry.

The result is an even stronger Mechanical Friction Fit™, allowing the rod rack to sit lower, distribute loads more evenly and make better use of the boat's own engineering.

It's another example of Ultimate Rod Racks adapting to the boat—not asking the boat to adapt to us.

Every Boat Has Its Own Story

The Frewza project reinforced one of the core principles behind GunnelCore™ Technology.

Two pontoon boats are not necessarily the same.

They may look similar.

They may even share similar dimensions.

But small differences in pocket geometry, supporting surfaces and construction can completely change the way a removable rod rack should be engineered.

That's why we don't believe in universal mounting systems.

Every boat deserves to be understood on its own merits.

Developed on Real Frewza Boats

Like every Ultimate Rod Rack configuration, the 60mm Hybrid™ wasn't developed from computer drawings alone.

It evolved through repeated measurements, prototype fitting and real-world installations on Frewza boats throughout New Zealand.

Every installation helped refine the fit.

Every measurement expanded our understanding.

Every improvement strengthened the GunnelCore™ philosophy of designing around the boat rather than adapting a generic product.

Today, the 60mm Hybrid™ remains one of our most specialised GunnelCore™ configurations and is manufactured to order for compatible Frewza models.

Compatible Frewza Models

Ultimate Rod Racks are compatible with a wide range of Frewza® boats featuring the folded C-section storage pocket used throughout much of the range.

Popular compatible models include:

  • F14
  • F16 Fisher
  • F16 Cruiser
  • F18 Fisher
  • F18 Centre Console
  • F20 Fisher
  • F20 Centre Console

...and many other compatible Frewza models.

Simply provide your exact boat model when ordering and we'll configure the appropriate GunnelCore™ mounting system before your rack is built.

As with all manufacturers, layouts continue to evolve between production years. If your boat differs from our records, we'll work with you to ensure the correct fit. If we get it wrong, we'll make it right.

Which Ultimate Rod Rack Is Best for Your Frewza?

Every Frewza owner fishes differently.

Some spend their weekends chasing snapper close to shore.

Others target kingfish over reefs or venture offshore for larger species.

That's why Ultimate Rod Racks are available in a range of configurations to suit different styles of fishing.

Popular options include:

  • 3 Rod Rack
  • 4 Rod Rack
  • 5 Rod Rack
  • 5 XL Rod Rack
  • 7 Rod Rack
  • 10 Rod Rack

Selected Game Series configurations are also available for anglers carrying heavier offshore tackle.

The best choice depends on your boat model, available mounting space and the way you fish.

That's exactly why we've developed our Shop by Boat™ system, making it easy to select the correct Ultimate Rod Rack for your specific Frewza®.

More Than Just a Rod Rack

Ultimate Rod Racks are designed to do far more than simply hold rods.

They form the foundation of our complete Rod Protection & Stabilisation System™.

Compatible accessories include:

  • DeckLine™ Lock Insert
  • Adaptive Base Protector
  • Game Wedge Stabiliser
  • Big Foot™ Home Storage System

Together they help reduce rod movement, minimise vibration and protect thousands of dollars' worth of fishing equipment both on the water and at home.

Built in New Zealand. Engineered Around Frewza.

Every Ultimate Rod Rack is proudly designed and manufactured in New Zealand.

The Frewza story reinforced one of the most important lessons we've learned over years of product development.

Boats that appear similar aren't necessarily engineered the same.

By taking the time to measure, prototype and understand the unique geometry of Frewza's storage pockets, we developed our deepest Hybrid™ Back Frame—the 60mm Hybrid™—creating another purpose-built GunnelCore™ solution designed around the boat rather than around a universal bracket.

Because every boat tells a different engineering story.

And every Ultimate Rod Rack starts by listening to it.

One of the biggest lessons behind GunnelCore™ Technology is that boats which appear similar aren't always engineered the same. Frewza® proved that even two pontoon boats can require completely different mounting solutions when you take the time to measure, prototype and understand the boat's unique geometry.

Discover how the strengthening bevel on Stabicraft® boats led to the development of our 34mm Hybrid™ Back Frame, and how the angled gunnel pockets found on many Senator® boats inspired the Silverback Low Rider™ (SLR™) mounting system.
