GunnelCore™ System: A Smarter Way to Mount Rod Racks on Modern Boats

GunnelCore™ System: A Smarter Way to Mount Rod Racks on Modern Boats - Ultimate Rod Racks NZ

Every Great Rod Rack Starts with Gunnel Pocket Geometry

Before a single back frame is designed, we study the boat itself.

Every manufacturer creates a unique combination of:

  • Gunnel pocket depth
  • Gunnel pocket angle
  • Supporting surfaces
  • Coaming profile
  • Gunnel height
  • Pontoon or hull geometry

Collectively, we refer to this as the boat's Gunnel Pocket Geometry.

Understanding that geometry is the foundation of every Ultimate Rod Rack mounting solution.

Because when the mounting system works with the boat's design—not against it—the result is a stronger, cleaner and more secure installation.

Whether you own a Stabicraft®, Senator®, Surtees®, Extreme®, Frewza®, FC Boats®, Profile Boats® or another popular New Zealand fishing boat, GunnelCore™ Technology helps us engineer the right mounting system for your specific gunnel pocket geometry.

Why Universal Mounting Systems Are Always a Compromise

Many removable rod rack systems rely on a single universal mounting bracket.

While that may allow them to fit a wide range of boats, it rarely provides the best fit for any one of them.

The result can include:

  • Rod racks sitting higher than necessary.
  • Reduced mechanical stability.
  • Uneven load distribution.
  • Poor contact with supporting surfaces.
  • Increased movement in rough conditions.
  • A less integrated appearance.

At Ultimate Rod Racks, we believed there was a better way.

GunnelCore™ Technology in Action

Rather than producing a universal bracket, GunnelCore™ Technology analyses each manufacturer's gunnel pocket geometry before selecting—or engineering—the correct mounting platform.

Today, that philosophy is represented by two primary back frame systems.

Hybrid™ Back Frame

The Hybrid™ Back Frame is engineered for boats with stepped or vertical gunnel pocket geometry.

Common applications include:

  • Stabicraft®
  • Surtees®
  • Frewza®
  • Profile Boats®
  • Many pontoon boats

The Hybrid™ uses the boat's own geometry to create a low, stable mechanical fit while protecting the boat with high-density EVA.

SLR™ (Silverback Low Rider)

The SLR™ (Silverback Low Rider) is engineered for boats featuring angled or low-profile gunnel pockets.

Common applications include:

  • Senator®
  • Extreme®
  • FC Boats®
  • Other compatible aluminium boats

Rather than simply following the angle of the pocket, the SLR™ uses that geometry to establish a secure mounting platform before returning the rod rack to its optimal orientation.

Every Boat Has Its Own Story

One of the best examples of GunnelCore™ Technology is the development of our 34mm Hybrid™ Back Frame for Stabicraft® boats.

During development, we discovered a small strengthening bevel at the base of the Stabicraft gunnel pocket.

Our original 20mm Hybrid™ Back Frame contacted this bevel before fully seating, causing the rack to sit slightly proud of the boat.

Instead of accepting that compromise, we redesigned the back frame around a 34mm profile.

The result was a lower installation, a stronger mechanical fit and a cleaner, more integrated appearance.

Senator® boats presented an entirely different engineering challenge.

Their distinctive angled gunnel pocket geometry led directly to the development of the SLR™ (Silverback Low Rider). Rather than allowing the rack to lean backwards with the gunnel pocket, the SLR™ uses that angle as part of its mechanical design, creating a lower, stronger and more stable installation.

These are two very different solutions—but they were both created using the same engineering philosophy: GunnelCore™ Technology.

More Than a Mounting System

GunnelCore™ Technology isn't simply about holding a rod rack.

It's about creating a complete rod management platform that works with the boat rather than against it.

Every Ultimate Rod Rack is engineered to:

  • Protect expensive rods and reels.
  • Distribute loads correctly through the boat.
  • Minimise movement while underway.
  • Maintain a removable installation.
  • Avoid unnecessary drilling or permanent modifications wherever possible.

Developed on Real New Zealand Boats

Every Ultimate Rod Rack is proudly designed and manufactured in New Zealand.

Our mounting systems haven't been developed in isolation. They've evolved through countless hours of measuring, prototyping and fitting on real New Zealand boats.

Each new boat teaches us something different about gunnel pocket geometry, and every lesson helps refine the next generation of GunnelCore™ Technology.

The Future of GunnelCore™ Technology

As new boat designs emerge and manufacturers continue to innovate, GunnelCore™ Technology will continue to evolve alongside them.

The philosophy, however, remains unchanged.

Study the boat.

Understand its gunnel pocket geometry.

Engineer the correct solution.

Never compromise with a universal bracket.

That's what makes Ultimate Rod Racks different.
