Why Ultimate Rod Racks Are Engineered to Fit StabicraftÂŽ Boats Better
Not all rod rack mounting systems are created equal.
If you own a StabicraftÂŽ, you'll already know these boats are built differently. Their distinctive pontoon design, strong aluminium construction and practical layouts have made them one of New Zealand's most respected fishing boats.
But those same design features also mean that not every aftermarket accessory fits as well as it should.
At Ultimate Rod Racks, we don't believe in designing one bracket and hoping it fits every boat. Every manufacturer approaches their gunnel design differently, and nowhere is that more apparent than on a Stabicraft.
That's why our Hybrid Back Frame wasn't designed to be universalâit was engineered specifically around the unique profile of the Stabicraft gunnel.
The result is one of the best fitting removable rod rack systems available for Stabicraft owners.
Understanding the Stabicraft Gunnel
At first glance, the factory rod holder pockets on a Stabicraft appear fairly simple.
Looking from above, they seem like a standard rectangular pocket.
However, once we began developing our mounting system, we discovered something that completely changed our design.
Unlike many aluminium boats, the Stabicraft rod holder pocket doesn't continue vertically all the way to the pontoon.
Instead, there's a small strengthening ribâor bevelâat the bottom of the pocket before it transitions into the pontoon.
That small pressed section adds strength to the boat, but it also creates a unique challenge when designing a removable rod rack.
If the mounting frame ignores this feature, it contacts the bevel before reaching the bottom of the pocket.
The result is a rack that sits slightly proud of the boat and can lean away from the gunnel rather than locating squarely against it.
It might only be a matter of millimetres, but in product design those millimetres make all the difference.
Our First Design
Like most engineering projects, our first prototype wasn't our final one.
Our original Hybrid Back Frame featured a 20mm pocket profile.
On paper it looked ideal.
On the boat it wasn't.
Although the rack worked well, the back frame contacted the Stabicraft bevel before fully seating into the pocket.
That caused the rack to sit on a slight angle.
It was functionalâbut we knew it could be better.
So we went back to the drawing board.
Designing Around the Boat Instead of Around the Rack
Rather than forcing the Stabicraft to suit our rod rack, we redesigned the rod rack to suit the Stabicraft.
After countless measurements, prototype fittings and refinements, we increased the pocket depth from 20mm to 34mm.
That relatively small change transformed the installation.
The deeper profile now clears the strengthening bevel, allowing the Hybrid Back Frame to drop much further into the pocket until it naturally locates against the pontoon.
Instead of the bevel becoming an obstacle, it became part of the design.

Turning a Design Challenge into an Advantage
One of the biggest improvements wasn't simply that the rack sat lower.
By allowing the back frame to settle deeper into the pocket, the angle of the Stabicraft gunnel actually began working in our favour.
The boat's own geometry now helps create a stronger mechanical fit.
As the Hybrid Back Frame seats into position, the EVA protective backing sits firmly and evenly against the inside face of the gunnel.
This provides:
- A lower overall installation
- Greater stability while underway
- Reduced movement over rough water
- Better load distribution across the mounting surface
- Improved protection for your boat through full EVA contact
- A cleaner, more integrated appearance
Sometimes the best engineering isn't about adding more material.
Sometimes it's about understanding the boat and designing around it.
